Aire Valley Arts Kath Bonson

As a Sculptural Ceramic Fine Artist, my work is primarily inspired by the landscape, colours and textures of my home area of the South Pennines. I believe that there is no one, single, definitive view of a landscape and that each aspect of a landscape can have a different and multi-layered  interpretation. I like to create work that is also open to multiple layers of interpretation.

It includes the use of several types of clay, with the surfaces developed in a variety of ways including the use of screen printed images based upon my own photography, pure oxides and multiple, textural glazes.  It ranges from large scale ‘exhibition’ pieces to those designed for a more domestic scale and includes freestanding pieces, vases , vessels and wall based pieces .

Having taken Art as one of my A level subjects at school, I then moved in a different direction, studying Business at Aston University in Birmingham where I graduated with a BSc(Hons) 2:1. Moving to Bradford in the 1980’s I then spent 20 years running a business.

A change of family circumstances saw me looking for a new direction and a general enquiry about courses at Bradford College led to an unconditional  offer of a place in 2006 on the BA Fine Art degree. During my time at Bradford College I studied Drawing and Painting but for the last year primarily concentrated on Ceramics. I graduated in 2010 with a BA(Hons) First class. I was also awarded a Licentiate with Merit by the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
